Regine Velasquez launches two new fragrances with a mini-concert

Regine Velasquez has a new venture—perfumes.

And there's no better way to launch her two trademark scents, Reigne and Songbird, than to perform a couple of unforgetable songs from her 25-year showbiz career. Last August 28, she tantalized the huge crowd at the main atrium of SM Mall of Asia with her scent and voice.

Sitting in the audience were her boyfriend Ogie Alcasid and Bench owner Ben Chan. Also spotted was Are You The Next Big Star? male winner Geoff Taylor, who told PEP that he was invited by the said clothing company. R&B Prince Jay-R hosted the event.

In between the songs were witty spiels, and the one that earned chuckles from the more than 400 mallgoers had something to do with her new role in the roster of Bench endorsers.

"Nung una, akala ko pagsusuutin ako ng panty para sa Bench Body," she said. "E, kaso napag-isip-isip siguro ng Bench na matanda na ang Songbird, kaya pabango na lang."

Regine also demonstrated the proper way to apply perfume—spray it in the air, walk into the mist, then let the scent envelope your body.

"Para pantay!" she advised.

SCENTS AND SONGS. The two perfumes were represented by two varying genres of music—Songbird was soothing like mellow ballads and love songs, while Reigne was playful and adventurous like edgy tunes and rock songs.

Included in the repertoire of Regine were her previous hits and some oldies: "Tuwing Umuulan at Kapiling Ka," "Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw," "I Will Survive," "Songbird, " "Alone," and "What About Love."

Things turned romantic when the SOP host ask her "special friend" Ogie Alcasid to go onstage, so that the audience could greet him a "Happy Birthday." The audience cheered when the couple kissed onstage.

Regine proceeded to sing "And I Love You So," Ogie's favorite song, which she had recorded for her 2008 album Low Key.

For her encore performance, Asia's Songbird sang the Broadway favorite "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," and stunned the crowd with her high notes.

After the show, we saw Ben Chan smiling. He told PEP, "We've always wanted to work with Regine. Ngayon na nagka-opportunity na makatrabaho siya, masaya kami."

Songbird slams nasty bloggers, chatters

She has been called a “has-been,” “blimp,” “shrieking diva,” and even more stomach-turning names in many chat rooms and fora in the Internet.

The bloggers and chatters who wrote these didn’t think their comments would reach her. Didn’t think it would wound her.

But they did.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Bulletin Online, Songbird Regine Velasquez finally addressed her detractors in the Internet: “I have kept silent about this for so long, but I think it’s time that I speak up.

“It’s okay to have an opinion…okay to criticize. Pero minsan ay may mga nababasa ako sa Internet about me na below the belt na. Na tipong gusto ko na lang mamatay dahil sa sakit. Or they make me feel as if I am so inadequate…as if I amount to nothing.

“I’m not taking these things against them. Siguro 'yon lang ang way nila nang pag-relate sa tao. Or yun ang outlet nila; yun nga lang, at my expense. Sometimes, they make it seem as if I have no right to be in this business. Kahit na ba yung iba sa kanila, di pa ipinapanganak ay kumakanta na ako.

“It’s really sad. Obviously these people don’t know me – don’t know the real me. Sobrang nakaka-break ng heart kasi some of them don’t even know ang mga pinaghirapan ko to get to where I am. Ang alam lang nila ay di sila naniniwala sa akin.

“Yung career ko, okay lang yon kung di sila naniniwala dun. If they don’t think I’m a good singer, that’s fine. It’s a matter of taste. Kahit papaano naman ay meron ding naniniwala that I’m a good singer.

“Yung pesonal na tira ang masakit. They’re so negative. Tumaba lang ako ng konti, titirahin. Minsan, pati pamilya ko, dinadamay na din. Masakit.

“The Internet is such a powerful medium. Pag may naisulat ka doon, hindi mo na matatanggal 'yon at pwedeng mabasa ng lahat. At pag nabasa na ng lahat, nasa ulo na 'yon ng tao, kahit na hindi totoo.

“Ang laki-laki ng power ng Internet. There’s this one episode in ‘The Tyra Banks Show’ na ikinalungkot ko after kong mapanood. It’s about this girl who met a guy through the Internet. Dahil hindi mataas ang self-esteem nung bata ay she believed everything the guy told him.

“Then one day, bigla na lang tumigil ang pag-email sa kanya nung guy. When he finally emailed again, ang sabi niya ay ayaw niya na dun sa girl kasi pangit daw yung girl at saka mataba. Kaya later, nung naiwang mag-isa yung girl sa bahay, nagpakamatay siya.

“Which brings me to my point: Why would you want to be responsible for somebody’s death? Or hurt feelings? Why can’t you be responsible with what you say or write? Pwede naman.

“Do we really need this negativity? With all the bad things already happening in the world – do we really (need) this? How sad.

“Yung mga reporters na nagsusulat ng ‘negative’ sa akin, naiintindihan ko dahil trabaho 'yon. They’re just trying to hype up a project or to cast their articles from a catchy angle. Trabaho 'yon at hindi lang dahil gusto nilang gawin.

“Do I sometimes feel the need to defend myself when I read such comments in the Internet? Minsan, oo, gusto kong depensahan ang sarili ko. To tell the truth and set the record straight. Pero hindi ko ginagawa. Para ano pa? What I say won’t matter to them. It won’t make a difference because they’ve made up their minds to bash me.

“Sa mga mahilig naman mag-compare ng mga artista in a negative way, please think about this: Sisikat naman ang alaga o iniidolo mo kahit wala kang hilahin pababa. Kung yun ang destiny niya at magaling naman talaga siya ay sisikat siya.

“Let’s be responsible bloggers or chatters kasi di natin alam kung sino ang nagbabasa ng isinusulat natin na lumalabas sa Internet. At kahit na ba totoo ang isinulat mo, we should know where to draw the line kasi baka nakakasira na tayo ng buhay.

“Sana mag-encourage na lang tayo ng tao. Sana piliin natin na maging positive kesa ang maging negative.

“Again, I am not taking it against these people. I also don’t think they are bad people. I just think they are not fully aware of what they are doing. Or they don’t know any better kung pano mailabas ang saloobin nila responsibly.

“Lahat naman tayo, bilang matitinong tao, ay ayaw makasakit ng ibang tao. But we sometimes do so kahit na ba unintentionally or unknowingly.Ang tanong, gusto ba talaga nating maging ganoong klaseng tao?”

Regine Velasquez will have a two-night event at the Skydome at SM North EDSA on Aug. 1 and 8. Titled “Most Requested,” the concert will feature songs that Regine has been most requested to sing throughout her three-decade strong career. Her special guest in the show is singer Eva Castillo.

Are You The Next Big Star? (2009)

Hosted by Asia's songbird Regine Velasquez, together with singer-actor Keempee de Leon, "Are You The Next Big Star?" pools together amateur and professional singers seeking a comeback in an all-out singing competition. The show was dreamed up to transcend other reality-based talent search with its ingenuity, freshness, and certified unique approach to finding the one worthy of being called "the next big star.

For the first time in a singing search, experienced singers are allowed to join provided that they have no existing recording contracts and no mainstream appearances as singers, in 2008 up to present. Also for the first time, not just one but two (one male and one female) singing superstar hopefuls will be proclaimed champions. From the more than 10,000 hopefuls who joined the screenings at SM Baliwag, SM Batangas, SM Marikina, and GMA Network, 150 contestants made it to the audition phase.

From there onwards, contestants will face 15 weeks of grueling tasks, workshops, and weekly live performances designed to sharpen their musicality, pop star power, and overall mass appeal, not to mention the capacity to withstand the demands of a career in the highly competitive world of music.

The impressive roster of judges include well-respected record producer/composer and songwriter Danny Tan, musical director and arranger Mon Faustino, vocal coach and founding member of "The Company" Anne Quintos, '90s pop icon Randy Santiago, and the concert queen Pops Fernandez. Throughout the search, a systematic elimination process will be employed to ensure that only the best of the best will emerge as winners.

The grand champions will each be awarded with a GMA exclusive management contract, a GMA Records recording contract, P1 million in cash from SM Supermalls, and other exciting rewards, along with a prized, once-in-a-lifetime shot at superstardom.
